Have mercy on marriage

Have mercy on marriage ( E saanu Igbeyawo)

In one of the preaching classes at the Seminary, a student asked: Can I preach a sermon titled “ E saanu Igbeyawo” ( Have mercy on marriage). There were  outbursts of laughter in the class to the extent that the lecturer could not even know what to say at that moment. The pastor was nicknamed esanu Igbeyawo until a day he was so vexed and told us that if we had known who preached the message we would not have mocked him. And we asked, Behold he was a respectable minister of God.  This did not make sense to some of us but we stopped calling him  esaanu Igbeyawo.

Marriage is an ordinance. It was a commandment from God, it is holy , a rite , a form of worship. In church, it is called Holy matrimony and solemnization. This connotes that marriage is a form of covenant, holy and ordained by God. There are many ordinances in the scripture but marriage stood out and it deserves to be honored.  The writer of Hebrews said marriage is honorable and God will judge adulterers who treat it with contempt. Marriage is not mandatory, not all people can marry because marriage is for all but not all have what it takes to make a marriage work. The way men work in and out of marriage makes it look so cheap and nothing special about it. Marriage deserves respect, honour and sympathy, probably the reason the old preacher Preached the message “E saanu Igbeyawo” meaning have mercy on marriage.                             Marriage a holy ordinance has become what men trample on with  their feet. Standing before a holy God or in a court of law affirming your commitment to marriage but only to treat marriage with contempt as if those words do not count. God was there when you said that “ You will be faithful to the wife of your youth” but presently you don’t care. Those words are covenanted and God will hold it against you. God said in the book of Malachi that he hates divorce, he told them things have been going bad for them because they have forsaken the wife of their youth. Though it is allegorical but it also explain why some husbands and wives are not prospering. You cannot treat marriage with contempt and expect God’s favour.

Marriage has become a curse to some people because they refuse to honour it as an ordinance from God. When God works against a man, who will deliver him from God? If you don’t want curse , you have to show mercy and be compassionate about marriage. And it is better to stay away from marriage than to marry and bring curse upon yourself. Not all people can marry, if you cannot forgive, marriage is not for you

If you cannot exercise patience, marriage is not for you

If you cannot persevere marriage is not for you

If you keep record of wrongs marriage is not for you

If you cannot submit marriage is not for you

If you cannot love marriage is not for you

If you cannot control your anger marriage is not for you.

You can be happy and satisfied without marriage.

Without marriage you can fulfill purpose and destiny

Marriage is not an achievement but a commitment.

Marriage is not something you rush into but what you patiently wait and prepare for.

If you do not have what it takes to marry, it is better to stay alone and enjoy your life to the fullest.

Without marriage you will be complete and happy.

If you choose to marry, you must prepare your mind to honour the sanctity and ordinance of marriage.

If you respect the sanctity, ordinance, and sacredness of marriage. You have respected God and God will honour you too. Once again dear married couples are you tired of that marriage, E saanu Igbeyawo ( Have mercy on marriage) , work it out and God will help you.
